Read today's Higher Things Daily Reflection

January 26, 2011 - St. Titus, Pastor and Confessor

Today's Reading: Titus 1:1-9

Daily Lectionary: Zechariah 2:1-3:10; Romans 15:1-13

[A bishop must] hold fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict. (Titus 1:9)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Can you be a Christian without a pastor? Can you read your Bible without a pastor? It depends why you're asking. If you want to be a Christian apart from the church and the care of the pastor whom the Lord has given you to explain and teach God's Word, then “no,” you can't be a Christian without one.On the other hand, it doesn't mean your pastor has to stand over your shoulder or you're not allowed to open your Bible!

The fact is, the world is full of crazy ideas about religion and God and Jesus. We are exposed to this nonsense in just about every aspect of our lives: in TVs and movies, from our atheist teachers and professors and even friends and family who belong to churches where the truth isn't taught. This is why the Lord gives you a pastor―to know the sound doctrine of God's Word and to build you up in that good teaching and to correct you when you have a wrong notion.

The reason for this is our salvation. Christ who is true God and true Man came down and suffered and died for us and then rose again the third day. By Baptism, Absolution, preaching and the Sacrament of the Altar, Christ bestows that forgiveness upon us.

The Lord sent His preachers so that the world would never have to doubt what God is up to. Those eyewitnesses preached the Gospel and then ordained men to keep preaching and teaching after they were gone.

Your pastor's job is to make sure that what you hear is what saves you: Christ crucified for sinners and repentance and forgiveness in His name. Your pastor knows you are surrounded by crazy and false teachings, so his job is to make sure you know the truth. And he does it under the Lord's authority. Jesus has given you a pastor so that you might faithfully receive Jesus. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

All praise for faithful pastors, Who preached and taught Your Word; For Timothy and Titus, True servants of their Lord. Lord, help Your pastors nourish The souls within their care, So that Your Church may flourish And all Your blessings share. (LSB 517:11)

Collect

Almighty God, You called Titus to the work of pastor and teacher. Make all shepherds of Your flock diligent in preaching Your holy Word so that the whole world may know the immeasurable riches of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament: Acts 20:28-35

28(A) Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all(B) the flock, in which(C) the Holy Spirit has made you(D) overseers,(E) to care for(F) the church of God,[a] which he(G) obtained(H) with his own blood.[b] 29I(I) know that after my departure(J) fierce wolves will come in among you,(K) not sparing the flock; 30and(L) from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31Therefore(M) be alert, remembering that(N) for three years I did not cease night or day(O) to admonish everyone(P) with tears. 32And now(Q) I commend you to God and to(R) the word of his grace, which is able to(S) build you up and to give you(T) the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33(U) I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. 34(V) You yourselves know that(W) these hands ministered to my necessities and(X) to those who were with me. 35In all things(Y) I have shown you that(Z) by working hard in this way we must(AA) help the weak and(AB) remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'It is more blessed(AC) to give than to receive.'"

Epistle: Titus 1:1-9

Greeting

1Paul, a servant[a] of God and(A) an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and(B) their knowledge of the truth,(C) which accords with godliness, 2(D) in hope of eternal life, which God,(E) who never lies,(F) promised(G) before the ages began[b] 3and(H) at the proper time manifested in his word(I) through the preaching(J) with which I have been entrusted(K) by the command of God our Savior;

4To Titus,(L) my true child in(M) a common faith:

(N) Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Qualifications for Elders

5(O) This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and(P) appoint elders in every town as I directed you— 6(Q) if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife,[c] and his children are believers and not open to the charge of(R) debauchery or insubordination. 7For an overseer,[d](S) as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not(T) be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent(U) or greedy for gain, 8but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy,(V) and disciplined. 9He must(W) hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in(X) sound[e] doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two

1After this the Lord appointed(A) seventy-two[a] others and(B) sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2(C) And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.(D) Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3Go your way;(E) behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4(F) Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and(G) greet no one on the road. 5Whatever house you enter, first say,(H) 'Peace be to this house!' 6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not,(I) it will return to you. 7And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for(J) the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9Heal the sick in it and say to them,(K) 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'

Daily Lectionary

First Reading: Zech. 2:1-3:10

A Vision of a Man with a Measuring Line

1[a] And I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold,(A) a man with a measuring line in his hand! 2Then I said, "Where are you going?" And he said to me,(B) "To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length." 3And behold,(C) the angel who talked with me came forward, and another angel came forward to meet him 4and said to him, "Run, say to that young man,(D) 'Jerusalem shall be inhabited(E) as villages without walls, because of(F) the multitude of people and livestock in it. 5And I will be to her(G) a wall of fire all around, declares the LORD, and I will be the glory in her midst.'"

6Up! Up!(H) Flee from the land of the north, declares the LORD. For I have(I) spread you abroad as the four winds of the heavens, declares the LORD. 7(J) Up! Escape to Zion, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon. 8For thus said the LORD of hosts, after his glory sent me[b] to the nations who plundered you,(K) for he who touches you touches(L) the apple of his eye: 9"Behold,(M) I will shake my hand over them,(N) and they shall become plunder for those who served them. Then(O) you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent me. 10(P) Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for(Q) behold, I come(R) and I will dwell in your midst, declares the LORD. 11(S) And many nations shall join themselves to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people.(T) And I will dwell in your midst, and(U) you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you. 12(V) And the LORD will inherit Judah as his portion in the holy land, and will again(W) choose Jerusalem."

13Be silent, all flesh, before the LORD, for he has roused himself from his holy dwelling.

A Vision of Joshua the High Priest

1Then he showed me(X) Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and(Y) Satan[c] standing at his right hand to accuse him. 2And the LORD said to Satan,(Z) "The LORD rebuke you, O Satan! The LORD who has(AA) chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this(AB) a brand[d] plucked from the fire?" 3Now(AC) Joshua was standing before the angel,(AD) clothed with filthy garments. 4And the angel said to(AE) those who were standing before him,(AF) "Remove the filthy garments from him." And to him he said, "Behold,(AG) I have taken your iniquity away from you, and(AH) I will clothe you with pure vestments." 5And I said,(AI) "Let them put a clean turban on his head." So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD was standing by.

6And the angel of the LORD solemnly assured(AJ) Joshua, 7"Thus says the LORD of hosts: If you will walk in my ways and(AK) keep my charge, then you shall(AL) rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access among(AM) those who are standing here. 8Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who sit before you, for(AN) they are men who are a sign: behold, I will bring(AO) my servant(AP) the Branch. 9For behold, on(AQ) the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with(AR) seven eyes,[e] I will(AS) engrave its inscription, declares the LORD of hosts, and(AT) I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day. 10In that day, declares the LORD of hosts, every one of you will invite his neighbor to come(AU) under his vine and under his fig tree."

Second Reading: Rom. 15:1-13

The Example of Christ

1(A) We who are strong(B) have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2(C) Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. 3For(D) Christ did not please himself, but as it is written,(E) "The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me." 4For(F) whatever was written in former days was written for our(G) instruction, that through endurance and through(H) the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you(I) to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6that together you may with one voice glorify(J) the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Christ the Hope of Jews and Gentiles

8For I tell you that Christ(K) became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order(L) to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9and in order(M) that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

(N) "Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,

and sing to your name."

10And again it is said,

(O) "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people."

11And again,

(P) "Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,

and let all the peoples extol him."

12And again Isaiah says,

(Q) (R) "The root of Jesse will come,

even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;(S) in him will the Gentiles hope."

13May the God of hope fill you with all(T) joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
